How to Fight Fair When You’re Furious

Most couples don’t have a conflict problem they have a repair problem. The fight isn’t what breaks a marriage,it’s what happens in the ten minutes after. This is about how to disagree without destroying each other.

Why this matters now. Every couple fights, the research and the scriptures agree on that. What separates the couples who last from the ones who don’t isn’t the absence of anger, it’s the presence of a pattern for handling it. Here is the pattern.

What Scripture says about anger

Ephesians 4:26 anger has a curfew.

“In your anger do not sin: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry.”

Paul doesn’t say don’t get angry he says don’t nurse it. Anger kept overnight ferments into bitterness. Deal with it today even if “dealing with it” just means saying “I’m too angry to talk well right now can we come back to this at eight?”

James 1:19 the order of operations.

“Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.”

Notice the sequence listening first, speaking second,  anger last. Most fights run the exact reverse. Flip the order and half your conflicts lose their fuel.

Proverbs 15:1 tone is a weapon or a tool.

“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”

Volume never won an argument  it only raised the stakes. Lower your voice before you make your point.

The fair fight playbook

Instead of thisTry this
You always / you neverLast Tuesday when X happened / I felt Y
Bringing up 2019One issue per conversation / park the rest
Winning the pointUnderstanding their point first / then making yours
Walking out and slamming the door“I need twenty minutes / I will be back”

The repair attempt. In the middle of a fight, one of you will usually offer a small olive branch, a joke , a touch, a softened tone. That is called a repair attempt. Couples who notice it and receive it stay together, couples who swat it away don’t. Watch for it tonight.

Your next step

Think about your last fight. Not who was right,  but where the repair broke down. Then ask your spouse this question tonight: “When we disagree, what is one thing I do that makes it harder for you?” Listen, don’t defend. That one conversation will do more for your marriage than winning the next ten arguments.
